Eligibility
Must be 60 years of age and older, must be able to stand without increasing pain for at least 10 minutes, must indicate safety to begin exercising by completing a pre-exercise screening survey or receiving a referral from a health care provider indicating safety to begin exercising, and must be willing to complete several surveys and fitness assessments as part of the research project

Offers a 6 week group program designed to help individuals establish regular patterns of walking. The program is endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control as an evidence-based program for older adults. 
  • Ames Program: held at the Ames Community Center Gym - 515 Clark Avenue, Ames, Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 1:30 pm-2:30 pm
  • Story City Program: held at the Mary Greeley Lifetime Fitness Center - 812 Elm Avenue, Story City, Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 11 am-12 pm
The group program consists of 3 self-paced, one hour long walking sessions each week for 6 weeks, with a goal of increasing walking ability each week. Sessions are held at predetermined times and locations to help create a consistent walking routine and to allow interactions with peers and program leaders.    Must be able to stand without increasing pain for at least 10 minutes, must indicate your safety to begin exercising by completing a pre-exercise screening survey or receiving a referral from a health care provider indicating your safety to begin exercising, and must be willing to complete several surveys and fitness assessments as part of the research project.
